Sprayset AL is a chloride-free, pale cream-coloured liquid concentrate based on a formulation of concentrated alkaline aluminates in aqueous phase.

Uses

Sprayset AL is used to accelerate the setting of cement in works carried out by the gunite and shotcrete spraying method, such as:

  • Coating in galleries and tunnels.
  • Consolidation of slopes.
  • Reinforcement of structures.
  • Waterproof coatings on concrete or rock.
  • Protection of rock surfaces against erosion due to environmental degradation.
  • Recommended for all underground works carried out using the NATM method (Austrian tunnel construction system).
  • For wet sprayed concrete, Fosroc recommends the use of Conplast and/or Structuro to improve workability and pumpability.

When a delay in the setting of the concrete is required, allowing storage for up to 18 hours, the use of Conplast R1 stabiliser is recommended.

Advantages

  • Increased performance due to reduced rejection.
  • Improved compactness and impermeability properties of gunite or shotcrete.
  • Chloride free. Does not attack steel reinforcement.
  • Rapid development of mechanical resistance during the first hours without detriment to the final resistance.
  • Possibility of obtaining greater thicknesses with less weight.
  • More accurate dosage than powder accelerators.
  • More uniform distribution over the mixture, avoiding the formation of stains on the surface due to excess powder.

Standards

Sprayset AL complies with UNE-EN 934-5:2009 Table 2 as a setting accelerator for shotcrete.

Typical dosage

The optimum dosage of Sprayset AL to achieve specific requirements should be determined by testing, using the materials and conditions that will be used in practice.

A starting point for such trials is to use a dosage of 3 to 6 litres per 100 kg of cementitious material, including ash, slag or microsilica.

Properties

The following results were obtained at a temperature of 20ºC:

  • Appearance: yellowish liquid.
  • Density: 1,39 ± 0,03 kg/l
  • pH: 13,0± 1,0
  • Water-soluble chloride content (CI-): ≤ 0,10%.
  • Alkali content (Na2O equivalent): max. 15% by mass
  • Primary function: Rapid setting of concrete
  • Secondary function: compaction and waterproofing of gunite.

Application method: Compatibility

Compatibility

The superplasticisers Conplast, Structuro and the stabiliser Conplast R1 are fully compatible with the use of Sprayset AL. If more than one admixture is used, they must be added to the concrete separately and not mixed together prior to addition. The resulting properties of concrete containing more than one admixture must be checked by prior testing.

Sprayset AL is suitable for use with all cements complying with RC-08.

Mixing

Sprayset AL is added to the mix by means of a nozzle, just at the moment of spraying. The characteristics required for each type of work will determine the dosage of Sprayset AL to be used, bearing in mind that high doses should be used to obtain high short-term resistances and that, on the other hand, when what is required is to obtain high long-term resistances, the dosage should be lower, provided that the circumstances allow it.

Granulometric curves

In order to achieve optimum quality of the shotcrete and shotcrete, the most suitable granulometric curve must be chosen for each case.

(2) Gunite with aggregate 0-8 mm

(3) Concrete with 0-16 mm aggregates

Effects of an overdose

An overdose can cause the concrete or mortar to set before reaching the placement site with consequent loss of materials.

Examples of characteristic results

Tests should be carried out using real materials and conditions to determine the optimum mix and additive dosage to meet the specific requirements.

Examples of characteristic results obtained in tests on pure cement paste with a water/cement ratio of 0.4 are given in this data sheet. The values represented are illustrative, although they should not necessarily be considered comparable with those obtained in particular cases.

Clean-up and disposal

Spills of Sprayset AL should be absorbed by sand or earth and transferred to suitable containers. Remnants should be flushed away with large quantities of water.

Storage

Sprayset AL has a storage period of 12 months in its original container in a cool place. This period will be affected by high temperatures and humidity.

Precautions

Safety and hygiene

Sprayset AL should not be swallowed or come into contact with skin and eyes. Wear gloves, protective clothing and goggles. Splashes on skin should be washed off immediately with water. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice. Do not induce vomiting.

For further information, please refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet.

Fire

Sprayset AL is not flammable.
