Description

Conplast SP337 is a chloride-free water-reducing additive based on specially selected and blended organic polymers. It is supplied in a liquid form that disperses in water instantly.

When added to concrete mixes it causes cement particles, which tend to agglomerate, to disperse and expose a larger contact surface, improving hydration. A setting delay of 1 to 2 hours will normally be obtained.

Uses

  • To significantly reduce water demand in concrete, without reducing workability, and allowing high early and ultimate strengths without additional cement.
  • To significantly improve the workability of concrete without increasing the water requirement.
  • Particularly suitable for increasing the workability of precast concrete at elevated temperatures.
  • To reduce the permeability of concrete and thus reduce water penetration and increase durability.

Advantages

  • Its use in the production of fluid concrete allows for easier placement and compaction, reducing labor costs.
  • The loss of workability in concrete is slower than that normally produced with superplasticizers.
  • Increased strength at all ages without increasing cement content, which is particularly beneficial in precast concrete.
  • The reduction in the water/cement ratio increases durability, producing a low permeability concrete with a lower risk of shrinkage cracking.

Standards

Conplast SP337 complies with UNE-EN 934-2:2010 Tables 3.1 and 3.2 as a high-activity water-reducing/superplasticizing admixture.

Typical dosage

The optimum dosage of Conplast SP337 to achieve specific requirements should be determined by tests using the materials and conditions that will be used in practice. This allows optimization of the admixture dosage and a complete evaluation of the mix.

For concrete with water reduction and high strengths, the normal dosage is 0.5-1.5 liters/100 kg of cement, including ash, slag and microsilica. For concrete with high workability the normal dosage is 0.5-1 liters/100 kg of cement.

Where a combination of performance is required, such as increased workability and reduced water content, a dosage of 0.5-1.5 liters/100 kg of cement may be considered.

Properties

The following results were obtained at a temperature of 20ºC:

  • Appearance: dark brown liquid.
  • Density: 1.205 ± 0.01 kg/L
  • pH: 1.08 ± 1.0
  • Water-soluble chloride content (CI-): ≤ 0.10%.
  • Alkali content (Na2O equivalent): max. 6% by mass
  • Primary function: Increase workability
  • Secondary function: Accelerate early strengths

Mode of application

Mix design

When the primary intention is to improve strengths, mixes should be carried out with normal concrete designs. The addition of admixture allows the removal of part of the water from the mix, while maintaining the workability at the levels obtained before the use of admixture. After initial trials, minimal modifications should be made to the mix as a whole to optimize results.

When the primary intent is to provide high workability concrete, the initial mix should be pumpable. In a properly designed flowable concrete, the improved dispersion of cement particles and more efficient use of water improves the cohesion of the mix. The slight air occlusion obtained with Conplast SP337 will also help minimize bleeding and segregation.

Compatibility

Conplast SP337 is compatible in the same concrete mix with other Fosroc Euco admixtures. All admixtures should be added to the concrete separately and should not be mixed together prior to addition. The performance of concrete containing more than one admixture should be checked by the appropriate test recommended in this data sheet to ensure that no effects such as undesirable setting retardation occur. Conplast SP337 is suitable for use with all types of ordinary Portland cement and other types of cementitious materials such as fly ash, slag and microsilica.

Dosing system

The correct amount of Conplast SP337 should be measured by means of a suitable dosing device. The admixture is then added to the concrete with the mixing water for best results. Contact Fosroc Euco's Technical Department for advice on suitable equipment and installation.

Effects of overdosage

An overdose of twice the normal amount of Conplast SP337 will result in a significant setting delay. This effect occurs with most water-reducing admixtures, although the degree to which it is affected may vary. Delay can also be affected by factors other than the admixture, such as the mix itself and the conditions under which it is produced.

If this is of particular importance, trials are recommended to evaluate the effects of a particular mix. Provided that adequate curing is maintained, the ultimate strength of the concrete will not be adversely affected by increased retardation and will generally be increased. The effects of an overdose will be further increased if sulfate-resistant cement is used. Overdosing may also cause increased air entrapment, which will tend to reduce strengths. The degree of this effect will depend on the particular mix and the level of overdosage. Overdosing will greatly increase the plasticizing effect of the admixture.

As concrete is normally mixed to a preset workability, the increased plasticizing effect will allow a greater reduction in water and a significant increase in workability is allowed, there is a great possibility of segregation.

The increase in concrete workability will result in a delay in setting times.

Curing

As with all structural concrete, good curing must be achieved, particularly in situations where an overdose has occurred. Fosroc Euco Concure, water (sprayed) or wet burlap should be used as a curing membrane.

Clean up and disposal

Spills of Conplast SP337 can be absorbed with sand or earth and transferred to appropriate containers. Remnants should be flushed away with large quantities of water. Disposal of the product and packaging is the responsibility of the end user.

Storage

Conplast SP337 has a storage period of 12 months provided it is kept at a temperature between 2 ºC and 40 ºC.

Freezing point: -3 ºC approx.

Precautions

Safety and Hygiene

Conplast SP337 should not be swallowed or come into contact with skin and eyes. Wear suitable protective gloves and goggles. Splashes on the skin should be washed off with water. In case of contact with eyes, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical advice. If swallowed, seek immediate medical attention. Do not induce vomiting.
